Organised by Atropos, Butterfly Conservation and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, Moth Night is the annual celebration of moth recording throughout Britain and Ireland by moth recording enthusiasts.
Each year a theme is chosen with one or more target species to look out for, but Moth Night is about all moths and participants are encouraged to find and record as many different species as they can. With the exception of 2020 public events have been a feature of Moth Night. We hope public events will be possible in 2021 and organisers will be able to publicise their events on the web site. Moth Night is the perfect event for garden participation, however, and we hope that people will make the most of the opportunity to look at what moths occur in their gardens.
Moth Night was founded in 1998 by Atropos and is now organised in collaboration with Butterfly Conservation and The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
Atropos is the UK journal for butterfly, moth and dragonfly enthusiasts. It is published four times a year including an annual Migration Review. Atropos maintains the popular Flight Arrivals news page where news of migrant insect sightings is posted. This website is a resource for visitors to find out about latest sightings, how to get involved in recording in their local area and to share information with other enthusiasts. Butterfly Conservation is the UK’s leading charity devoted to the conservation of butterflies and moths and their habitats. Butterfly Conservation runs the National Moth Recording Scheme, which covers some 900 species with thousands of active recorders, and the enormous dataset of distribution records that it has generated is benefiting nature conservation, public understanding and ecological research.
The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is a world-class research organisation focusing on land and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. It manages a range of long-term environmental monitoring sites and networks across the UK.
